Weeks after horrific injury, Oklahoma State installs padding on wall

Oklahoma State is installing padding around Irving Field after receiver Keontez Lewis ran headfirst into a brick wall three weeks ago.

Padding will be added to the end zone wall and sideline wall outside the team bench ahead of Saturday's game between No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 8 Ole Miss, a school spokesman confirmed. The change was first reported by the school's student newspaper, the OU Daily.

Lewis was injured in the first quarter of Oklahoma's 44-0 victory over Kent State on October 4. Michael Hawkins Jr.'s pass was somewhat overthrown, and Lewis' momentum carried him into the unpadded wall behind the end zone. He was taken away, causing concern among fans.

Most of the walls are unfilled and close to the site boundaries. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said plans for the change were in the works within days of the injury.

Lewis plays against Texas next week but missed Saturday's 26-7 win over South Carolina. The SEC injury report lists him as doubtful for this Saturday's game.
