U.S. President Donald Trump said in a post on Thursday that the National Guard was preparing to “reinforce” San Francisco, but he was influenced by Jensen Huang, Marc Benioff and others to delay the deployment.
Trump posted on Truth Social that he also spoke with Democratic Mayor Daniel Lurie and that Lurie had “made substantial progress” in fighting crime.
“Great people like Jen-Hsun Huang and Marc Benioff called to say the future of San Francisco is great,” Trump wrote.
The reversal marks a major political victory for the city of San Francisco and Lurie in his first term.
In recent speeches about the rollout's potential, Lurie touted the city's progress on business development and crime, often citing data showing San Franciscans believe the city is on track again.
“Late last night, I received a call from the President of the United States,” Lurie said in a statement. “I told him the same thing I tell our residents: San Francisco is rising. Visitors are coming back, buildings are being rented and purchased, and workers are returning to their offices.”
