Todd Monken says crows need to run more frequently

Crows have long been known for their offensive impact. They led the league in 2024, with Derrick Henry rumbling for nearly 2,000 yards.

But after four games, only two teams ran the ball better than the Crows' 86 attempts.

Henry has rushed just 31 times in the past three weeks, having been hit 50 yards or less in three straight games, something that has never happened in 2024.

The Ravens averaged the best league-to-be 6.2 yards per carry, but offensive coordinator Todd Monken admits Baltimore needs to make the run bigger.

“It can start with calling more often and stacking dramas,” Monken said. “We either get to the point where we score very quickly or we get off quickly, which is not a great recipe because you can't stack races.

The Ravens still rank third in the NFL with 32.8 points per game. Their offense is sometimes explosive. But they didn't wear down the team with a rapid attack.

“The most important thing is that we've had some games doing some explosive runs, but it's hardly the level we expected. But it's still early and I hope we can really get back on track.”

“The expectation here is elite. We have always been elite. We will continue to be elite. But I have to do better, we have to do better.”

Head coach John Harbaugh said Monday that his several offensive games against the Chiefs in Week 4 were expensive for the Ravens. They scored a touchdown from the opening drive, but the next four drives were interceptors, the punt, and the fourth stop was lost.

Monken said he was not surprised by Harbaugh's comments at the weekly press conference.

“John said one thing we haven't talked about yet,” Monken said. “No feeling I haven't heard or felt. I've done one thing throughout my career – you have to look at your work. How do we plan? How do we teach it? How do we execute it? How do our plan be executed? When our plan is below, you have to have it and fix it.”

Henry also acknowledged that Baltimore’s running attack needs improvement, which will require collective efforts.

“I'm focusing on doing better than I did in the last four weeks,” Henry said. “It takes us all in the running game. I'm sure everyone is focusing on that. We need to go there to achieve that. Dominate the melee. Execution is a big deal. Everyone does their job the way they do.”
