Talton State coach Billy Gillispie takes leave during inquiry

  • by admin

Talton State coach Billy Gillispie was placed on temporary administrative leave while investigating anonymous complaints, the school announced Friday.

No details of the nature of the complaint were provided immediately, and no timetable on how long the investigation would take. Deputy head coach Glynn Cyprien takes over as acting head coach.

The school said this would not be commented further.

Gillispie faced allegations of abuse of players when she was coaching at Texas Tech in 2011 and 2012. He resigned from the Red Raiders coach's resignation – quotes health concerns. The resignation came about a month after the school investigated the claim, and about one month after the claim was investigated by Texas Tech players, which led them to concerns about Gillispie's treatment.

Questions about Gillispie's coaching style were also raised during his time in Kentucky, including treatment for players and staff in the athletic department. He was fired in 2009 and Kentucky athletic director said Gillispi was “not suitable for the program.” Later that year, a $3 million dismissal agreement was reached.

Gillispie, 65, has been in his sixth season at Tarleton State, the longest of his five division head coaching tenure, including time in UTEP and Texas A&M.

He has a 78-74 record at Tarleton State, including a 25-10 record in 2023-24 and a CIT appearance. He won the game 226-182 in 13 seasons with four NCAA Championship appearances.

Cyprien is a long-time university assistant, including UNLV, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky, Memphis and Texas Tech.
