Seth Rogen has made enemies in the television academy.
During a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the “Studio” star said he believed he was blacklisted from the Emmys for performing an unscripted performance at the 2021 awards.
“I do have that theory,” Rogan said. “I remember that was four years ago at that time, and I gave a talk there, but I haven’t been invited back.”
COVID-19 regulations are in full force during the 2021 Awards Ceremony. Even so, Rogan recalled, security was not as tight as promised and he was kept in a tent with hundreds of people.
“The first thing I want to say is, there are too many people in this small room,” he explained. “What are we doing? They said it was outdoors. It's not. They lied to us. We're in a sealed tent now. I wouldn't have come here. Why is there a roof?”
He added, “It's true! They lied. They did lie. It said 'Outdoors.'” I was so intent on doing the stupid trick they wrote for me, and then I show up, and I'm like, 'We're in a tent.' I can't ignore this…Eugene Levy is here! Are we going to kill Eugene Levy? I don't want to do that. “
Rogen said the producer was “outwardly angry” with him afterward.
Three-time Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel then took a jibe at his guest, joking: “I checked today because I've hosted the Emmys a few times and you are indeed not allowed to attend.”
“I've been blacklisted,” Rogan replied. “I'm the same as you. They're trying to silence me. You can't win.”
Although Rogen jokingly expressed his displeasure, he admitted, “What I did was very out of line and made them look bad. So, I get it.”
While he may be barred from giving Emmys, Rogen is certainly not barred from winning them. The Apple TV+ industry comedy “The Studio,” created by and starring Rogen, leads the 2025 Emmy Awards with 13 total awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.
