Real-time update: Severe storms pass through the Chicago area, prompting watches and warnings

Several Chicago-area counties issued a severe storm surveillance Monday afternoon until 6 p.m.

Real-time weather updates:

  • 4:34 pm – Ground stops were issued at O'Hare and Midway Airports due to thunderstorms until 5:30 pm. Severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued to parts of Dekalb, Kane and Kendall counties until 5:15 p.m.
  • 4:22 pm – Flood Consulting issuance until 7:30 pm for Kane County.
  • 4:15 pm – Partial thunderstorm warnings against Cook, Dupage, Dekalb and Kane counties until 5:30 pm
  • 4:07 pm – A tornado warning to Northwest Kane County until 4:30 p.m. urges residents to hide and stay away from windows.
  • 4 pm – Severe storms passing through DeKalb and Kane counties are able to emit 70 mph winds and nickel-sized hail. There are signs of rotation.
  • 3:50 pm – Flood surveillance issued by several Chicago area counties until 4 a.m.
  • 3:43 pm – Severe thunderstorm warnings from DeKalb and Kane until 4:30 pm, severe thunderstorms follow a line from near Genoa to near Kingston to 7 miles south of Ashton. The storm moved eastward at 25 mph. It is possible to have a 60 mph wind gust and a quarter-sized hail.
  • 3:20 pm– Severe thunderstorm warning from DeKalb County until 4 p.m.
  • 2 pm – Severe thunderstorm observations until 6 p.m. for several counties in the Chicago area. Currently, a strong storm is underway in McHenry County, capable of producing 50-55 mph wind gusts and a penny of hail.

What to expect:

The watch takes effect until 6 p.m., such as Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Lake, La Salle, McHenry and Will.

The National Weather Service said tornadoes and quarter-sized hail were possible, with a maximum speed of 70 mph.

We have a few storms now entering northwest Indiana, but more storms are loading northwest.

This afternoon and evening, we face the risk of wild winds from severe storms. Wind is the biggest threat, but tornadoes and heavy rain are also possible. The rain chance continues tonight and early Tuesday.

Today's highs will be in the mid- to mid-80s, with humidity pushing the heat index into the mid-90s.

What's next:

Tomorrow, we will dry with a partially clear sky. Tuesday's high will be in the mid-80s again.

Turn Wednesday. We were more comfortable here on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Wednesday's high will be around 80 sunny skies. Thursday will be sunny with highs in the 1980s.

On Friday, the mid-80s to upper highs under sunny sky look touching. This weekend, we will be back to the lows of the 70s and 80s with the sunshine.
