Mets superstar Pete Alonso hints that he wants to compete next season

  • by admin

Pete Alonso is already a fixture in the history of the New York metropolitan history. Will he remain a team game next season?

Last year, Alonso's free agents were exhausted for everyone involved. It wasn't until February, before spring training began, five-time All-Stars were selected to agree to a two-year, $54 million contract to return to the Mets and opt out after the season.

This season, Alonso broke the Mets' record, up 25 times from a year ago and improved his OPS by 75 points. It was a virtual assurance that he once again broke into the open market and people had to wonder if he and the Metropolitan could find a way to promote something more permanent.

While people never know what baseball operations are thinking, Alonso stripped the curtains on Wednesday with his own mindset.

In an interview with New York Post insiders Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman’s “Performance” podcast, Alonso was asked if he wanted to return to the Mets, and for all intentions and purposes, he really is.

“We'll see what happens. I love it, it's great, but you really can't predict anything,” Alonso said. “I'm focused on trying to get this thing across the finish line so we can get into the playoffs and do the damage. I didn't really think about free agent things until we talk about it now.

“I mean, yes, it's great to stay, but…whatever happens, you know? I can't get the crystal ball. I wish I could, but we'll see it,” he said with a smile.

Alonso was 31 in December, which is likely his best chance to cash in a long-term deal. One would want him to leave New York, and the deal had to come from another team, not his current team.

It has long been obvious that Alonso likes the metropolis. This winter will be the ultimate test of how much the team decision makers love him.
