Kevin Durant extends contract in Houston

“I did see myself signing an extension of the contract,” said Kevin Durant. “I can't tell you exactly when it will happen, but I did see it happen.”

On the surface, the Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant have not yet reached a contract agreement after the 2025-26 season.

But that doesn't mean that a person hasn't come. In fact, it may be very soon.

In a preview of the upcoming season on Monday’s Media Day, the NBA All-Star Game made it clear that he wasn’t taking advantage of his July 2025 deal, which took only one year.

“I do see myself signing a contract,” Durant told reporters at the Toyota Center. “I can't tell you exactly when it will happen, but I do see it happening.”

Playing at the University of Texas – Longhorn connections throughout the organization, including assistant coach Royal Ivey and front-end scout DJ DJ Augustin, Durant made it clear that he had no regrets about his choice.

“This is the first time that the Houston Rockets' organic and natural entry into the gym,” the 37-year-old said. “I have always respected this coaching staff, this fan base, this state, this city. It feels great.”

“KD” is also linked to head coach Ime Udoka, as Udoka serves as chief assistant to Brooklyn, as part of Durant being with the Nets.

“Playing length, size, playing with transitions, driving and kicking, opening defense…I want to play that style, too,” Durant said.

“IME has always been one of the people who understand what I bring, my mindset and the way to play,” Durant added. “He always respects that and gives me the space to be me.”

Durant received All-Star honors with the Phoenix Suns last season, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game – while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43.0% from three-pointers.

Rockets general manager Rafael Stone declined to comment on the current status of the extended talks or negotiations. Durant is scheduled to make $54.7 million this season in the final year of his previous contract.

The Rockets and Durant have no deadline for negotiations, and Houston has the right to exceed the salary cap and retain its services.
