“Why Us?” Tennessee hairstylists receive training in domestic violence awareness

Senators introduced federal legislation to encourage all states to provide domestic violence awareness training to beauty professionals.

This story discusses domestic violence. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Miranda Gray has been beaten, pushed into the door, threatened with a knife, and cut down with another knife in at least three separate recorded incidents.

Nashville Metropolitan Police said in a statement that she is now dead and was strangled on August 18.

Investigators arrested her boyfriend, Jared Streich, 40, in connection with all these incidents and her death.

Streich, a former lawyer, called police at the 46-year-old Gray Hermitage Park Avenue apartment around 9:30 a.m. to report that she was not responding. According to their statement, when police arrived, Grey was apparently dead. An official asked Streich that she had no response time.

“He refused to answer,” the police said in a statement.

A recorded history of violence

While it is not clear what happened to Gray, Strach was arrested for violating bond conditions related to the aggravated attack allegations in February. According to court records, in the incident, Strach allegedly threatened Gray with a knife. According to his bond conditions, he should stay away from the apartment building.

An autopsy on August 19 left it noticeably gray and did not die of natural causes. Police said she was injured a lot and was strangled to death.

Streich was arrested at least four times in connection with domestic violence.

In April, Gray reported that he “thrust her to the ground” and “draged her into their bedroom,” according to court records. He then pushed her head into the closet door and Streich closed the patio door on Gray's arm as she tried to leave, court records said.

Streich was charged with aggravated assault and breach of bond conditions. Records show that the charges were dropped two days later.

Police said Strach was again charged with aggravated assault and bond violations in July, and he reportedly cut Gray's wrist with a knife. Two days later, the charges fell again.

Streich was arrested for a fourth time on August 3 for breach of bond conditions when police were asked to go to the apartment for domestic harassment. His bonds were set at $2,500 and he was released.

Police said in a statement that every time the officer responded to Gray’s apartment, she received consultation, protection orders, prosecution and shelter services, but she turned down everyone.

Earlier this year, Streich had been working as an attorney in Rutherford County.

The Tennessee Supreme Court suspended him for six years on June 13. He was ordered to compensate two former clients and would be sentenced to probation if he regained his rule.

Records show that the case stems from two complaints that were not related to criminal activities, which were related to the Professional Responsibility Committee.

Documents show that he failed to communicate with the client about the status of his case, nor did he act diligently and expedite the client's lawsuit.

The complaint also stated that Strach failed to take action, failed to return the client’s property, charged unreasonable fees, and provided false information to the Professional Responsibility Committee.
