Asheboro couples call News 2 after engine dispute to change oil

A regular service turned into an expensive battle, but persistent – News 2 called on the action team – proposed the resolution.

Ashborough, North Carolina – It was a quick oil swap before a family vacation turned into a month-long controversy between Kelly and Asheboro.

Trouble started shortly after the family trip, Kelly said.

“When I went to start the car, it hit awful,” he recalled. A moment later, his vehicle collapsed in the driveway.

The inspection under the hood shows the reason – no oil. The dealer later determined that during the oil change, the drain plug was exceeded and stripped, causing the engine to malfunction.

The couple returned to the store in charge, but they said they said their phones were ignored more than six.

“They kept postponing us, delaying us,” Jamie said.

With the cost of new engines on the production line, they contacted News 2 for help. After the station got involved, the store reversed the course, agreed to pay for the replacement of the engine and covered the rental car for two and a half months.

“We appreciate everything you did,” Kelly said.

Tips for handling car service disputes

  • Record all content: Keep receipts, service records and photos of any damage or problematic receipts.

  • Obtained a second opinion: A dealer or another certified store can provide a written report on the cause of the problem.

  • Said in writing: Communicate with the store via email or certified letter to create a note.

  • Understand your rights: Many states have consumer protection agencies or motor vehicle repair panels that handle complaints.

  • If necessary, please upgrade: If the business is unable to respond, consider a small claim court or contacting a local media or consumer advocacy organization.
