This week, the Mega Millions jackpot soared to $754 million, the ninth largest prize in the lottery game's history since it began in 2002. In 2023, the Mega Millions top prize is $1.6 billion.
The last prize claimed was in June in Virginia, where a lucky ticket holder won $348 million. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday, and $5 tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The next drawing will be tonight at 11pm ET.
While a hefty tax bill would significantly reduce the jackpot amount, we examined it and chose to use $754 million to illustrate the full scope of the prize.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on Instagram back in August, along with a photo of a diamond engagement ring that was large enough to rival one of Kelce's three Super Bowl rings.
“Taylor's stone appears to be an ancient elongated cushion weighing between 8 and 10 carats,” New York City jeweler Stephanie Gottlieb told Yahoo. She estimated that a natural diamond of this size could cost between $400,000 and $800,000.
Laura Taylor of Lorel Diamonds told InStyle that if Swift's diamond was a natural diamond between 10 and 12 carats and had other quality characteristics, it could be worth as much as $1 million, while Frank Darling co-founder and CEO Kegan Fisher estimated the ring's value at $750,000.
Yahoo's valuation exceeds $750,000, which is slightly more than half of the $400,000 to $1 million valuation range. At that price, the Mega Millions winner could afford 1,005 of Swift's sparkling engagement rings.
