IRS data shows average tax refund amount increased nearly 2% from last year

With the October 15 extended filing deadline now a thing of the past, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) last week released its latest statistics for the 2025 tax filing season, showing a slight increase in total tax returns received and average refund amounts compared to mid-October 2024.

More than 102 million Americans have received tax refunds from the IRS, with the average filer's refund increasing by about 1.6% from last year.

As of October 17 (the latest date currently available), the IRS has issued 102,122,000 refunds, which is actually -1% less than the 103,185,000 refunds issued on October 18 of last year.

The agency has issued a total of $311.6 billion worth of refunds, up 0.6% from the $309.9 billion issued in mid-October 2024.

As of October 17, the average refund amount was $3,052, 1.6% higher than the average refund amount of $3,004 during the same period last year. The average direct deposit refund amount for the 2025 tax filing season is $3,151, up 1.9% from last year.

As of October 17, the IRS had received 163,594,000 tax returns, an increase of 1.3% from the 161,489,000 tax returns received as of October 18, 2024.
