Measles outbreak intensifies in South Carolina; Canada's elimination status threatened

  • by admin

Two more cases have been added to the measles outbreak in upstate South Carolina, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 25.

Health officials said both infections were linked to close contacts of known cases who had been quarantining at home after being exposed at two schools with high rates of unvaccinated students.

Of the 25 cases in the state, 22 occurred during the Upstate outbreak.

Rockland County, New York, reported its second case of measles in the past three months. These cases are noteworthy because Rockland County was the site of a large measles outbreak in 2018-19 and has a large unvaccinated population.

This new case is not related to the measles case in August. County health officials said. The new patient reported a rash shortly after returning from international travel last week.

More than 5,000 measles cases in Canada

Today marks one year since measles continues to circulate in Canada, a cycle of viral activity that threatens the country’s elimination status.

Since the fall of 2024, there have been more than 5,100 cases in Canada, more than double the number recorded in the past 25 years combined. The country eliminated measles in 1998, but that status is now in jeopardy because elimination status requires local circulation of the virus for at least 12 months.

According to CNN, the Pan American Health Organization will assess the elimination status of multiple North American countries at its annual meeting next month.

About 90 per cent of cases reported in Canada last year were among unvaccinated residents, and all but 157 were linked to the outbreak that began in Ontario in October 2024.
