Tenor Health Foundation announced the purchase of three area hospitals in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties Friday afternoon.

PA, USA – Federal hospitals in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties may be new owners.

Tenor Health Foundation announced in a news release that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the health system, which includes Scranton Regional Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and related clinics and outpatient centers.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti released a statement regarding the hospital sale, which reads:

Our goal has always been to keep the doors of District Hospital and Moses Taylor Hospital open and our dedicated staff employed. After months of conversations with Tenor, Governor Shapiro's administration, state representatives and community foundation leaders, I am cautiously optimistic that this sale will mean we will continue to provide quality health care in Scranton.

We will do our best to support Tenor in seeking the licenses and financing needed to maintain and improve the hospital.

Scranton is the heart of NEPA and it is critical that the city continues to be a hub of health care for our residents and all NEPA“.

Congressman Rob Bresnahan commented on the purchase agreement in a statement:

I am encouraged by this positive move to ensure continuity of care in the community. These hospitals are vital to Scranton and the broader region, not only as providers of critical medical services, but as major employers and mainstays of our local economy. My team and I will continue to work closely with all participating local, state and federal leaders to help finalize this agreement and ensure that everyone in Northeastern Pennsylvania has access to high-quality, accessible care“.

The deal remains subject to review.

“We are grateful to community leaders for partnering with us, as well as the medical staff and hospital staff who continue to provide much-needed services to these hospitals,” Tenor Health Foundation CEO Radha A. Savitala said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to work with all key stakeholders to ensure a seamless acquisition and transition.”

Tylenol Health Foundation operates another hospital in Pennsylvania near the Ohio border.
