U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary in the coming weeks, following a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky in Washington on Friday.

“A meeting with our senior advisers,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social The meeting, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will take place next week, but the destination has not yet been determined.

“President Putin and I will then meet at the agreed location in Budapest, Hungary, let's see if we can end this 'disgraceful' war between Russia and Ukraine,” he said. “President Zelensky and I will meet tomorrow in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversations with President Putin, among other things. I believe today's phone conversation made a lot of progress. “

As Russia hospitalizes, Trump threatens to 'talk' to Putin about supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine

While Trump said the two had a lengthy conversation about U.S.-Russian trade, he did not mention the U.S. arming Ukraine with top-notch defense equipment such as Tomahawk missiles – the main reason Zelensky came to Washington and what allegedly prompted Trump's call with Putin.

Earlier this week, Trump said he needed to talk to Putin to see if he wanted to “get the Tomahawks moving in their direction.”

Acquiring Tomahawk missiles is a top priority for Zelenskiy because the advanced weapon would have a range well beyond Moscow and could transform Ukraine's ability to strike not only more Russian military installations but also its oil industry, which largely funds its war chest.

Trump and Putin announced a meeting just hours after Russian missiles and drones struck Ukrainian cities and energy sites in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“There are wounded. Treatment efforts are taking place everywhere. Emergency services are doing their job,” Zelensky said, adding that the Russians were also reportedly using “double terror” tactics, targeting firefighters and energy workers with Shahd drones carrying cluster munitions.

“The Russians have been attacking our energy infrastructure every day this fall,” he added. “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin is deaf to everything the world says, so the only language that reaches him is the language of pressure—pressure through sanctions, pressure through remote capabilities. “

Zelensky will travel to Washington on Thursday to meet with Trump and defense and energy officials to discuss how to increase pressure on Putin to counter his war ambitions in Ukraine.

Trump told reporters this week that other defense items, such as more Patriot missiles, would also be discussed during Friday's talks.

Trump has not yet confirmed whether he will provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, but he has increasingly expressed his frustration that Putin, who has been working since returning to the White House in January, will not stop his war ambitions.
