A large earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the South Atlantic on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake triggered warnings of a possible tsunami off the coast of Chile in western South America, but more than an hour later authorities said dangerous waves were unlikely.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska and Hawaii said there is no tsunami danger in Hawaii, Canada and the east and west coasts of the United States.

The quake struck at 4:29 p.m. Eastern time, according to the agency.

When seismologists review existing data, they may revise the reported magnitude of an earthquake. More information collected about earthquakes may also prompt USGS scientists to update seismic intensity maps.

Aftershocks occurred in the area

Aftershocks are usually smaller earthquakes that follow a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are typically small adjustments along the portion of the fault that slipped during the initial earthquake.

Earthquakes and aftershocks within 100 miles

Aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the first earthquake. These events may be the same or larger in magnitude than the original earthquake, and they may continue to impact already damaged sites.

When aftershock data are available, corresponding maps and charts include earthquakes within 100 miles and earthquakes within 7 days of the initial earthquake. All times above are Eastern Time. Shake data as of Friday, October 10, 4:47 PM ET. Aftershock data is available as of Saturday, October 11, 1:14 PM ET.
