Former MSNBC host Joy Reid criticized the idea of eliminating income tax when attacking Republicans during a BET talks event on Monday.

Reid said in a BET interview that the Conservative Party’s goal is to force the country back to the early 20th century (if not the 19th century) with a desire for a “hierarchical past” with white people above. She warned that part of the Conservatives hoped that the recovery would include not only the racial hierarchy but also the rollback of business regulations.

“One of the reasons why this is so serious about them is that if you go back before the 20th century, there is no income tax,” Reed said. “There is no provision for the business. You can earn as much money as you need, leave 100% of it to your kids, no taxes. That's the world they want.”

She added: “In order for society to be restored, they need to change society. They need people to be less modern. They need people to want less. They need people to be satisfied with only workers. And they don't really believe that any of us have natural rights.”

The federal income tax was proposed in 1913 and approved the 16th Amendment.

In his speech, Reed stressed the importance of being a journalist and activist, saying that journalists are “the last thing between us and fascism.”

“I mean, people say, people are talking about shockers, but that’s the fact, we’re in a fascist moment,” Reed said. “It means the right, the white nationalist, the white supremacist moment, around the hierarchy.”

Reid has long been known for his controversial comments about conservatives since serving as MSNBC host. In 2021, she wrote on X (and then Twitter) that conservatives will actually cut taxes to give a chance to openly racism.

“I will say it again: the people on the right will exchange all those who have tax cuts in order to be able to speak the n-word publicly, such as 'Good Times of the Past'. It is impossible for them to be openly racist without consequences being oppressive.
