Alexander Zverev faces 24-year-old Jacob Fearnley, England, tonight in the second round of the 2025 U.S. Open.
Zverev is the third-place seed, still chasing his first Grand Slam title – the missing piece separates him from the elite of the game.
Questions about his physical and mental durability, even if his results show consistency. He opened 6-2, 7-6 (4), beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-4 to raise the tough record this year to 20-6.
His seasons include runner-up at the Australian Open, clay field champion in Munich, quarterfinals in Rome and Paris and back-to-back semi-finals in Cincinnati and Toronto.
On paper, he seems ready to end the tough summer swing with a breakthrough, but his victory often brings a fragile breath.
Fearnley became a British wildcard, making his American open-ended stand out. He frustrated veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round, showing off his shooting and calmness, which allowed him to win several third and fourth rounds in the Grand Slam this season.
Still, his momentum seems to have slowed down lately, and tonight he needs to improve Zverev's level significantly.
Zverev-Fearnley is facing the head
Zverev beat him at the Australian Open and Miami earlier this year, leading 2-0 in the frontline Fearnley. Those hard wins are not given up.

ZVEREV direct combination. Fearnley has the tools to make rallies interesting, but Zverev's experience, service and baseline consistency should be comfortable to see him.
