A California Lottery scratch ticket that won $2 million has been sold in the long-term neighborhood corner market on the peninsula.

Roosevelt Wine & Grocery Stores at El Camino Real in Roosevelt Avenue and Redwood City have been community fixtures for 20 years.

According to state lottery officials, the store owner, owner of Steve and has been a long-time provider of California lottery games, said he believes it is “a high income for his small business.”

The store owner and his wife are well known in the community. He told lottery officials that his customers had been here for years and he had a good relationship with them.

Officials say it was the biggest lottery prize sold by the store.

“Before this deal, he remembered the biggest prize he sold was $250,000,” California Lottery shared in a press release.

$10,000 Bonus

The $2 million winning vote also means an unexpected gain for Steve and his wife.

Roosevelt Wine & Grocery Store sells a scratch ticket of more than $1 million, and the bonus will be awarded $10,000.

What we don't know:

Unlike games involving drawings, there is no way to know when the winning scratcher is sold, or even which particular game is sold.

California Lottery offers over 50 different scratcher games.

“We only know about the victory and the winning tickets from the store, when scanning in the California Lottery app, or sometimes in the California Lottery District Office (claiming that it is sometimes introduced at the California Lottery Office)” Lottery spokesman Daniel Kelly explained in an email.

The claim process for verifying the winner

Officials also pointed out that winners still need to follow standard, strict claims procedures in accordance with all the big wins to ensure that the prizes are awarded as they deserve.

The process involves being reviewed by law enforcement to verify the legitimacy of victory.

Lottery officials say that once the entire process is completed, the winner will receive the prize, which takes six to eight weeks.

What's next:

As for Steve, he proudly boasted about his business as a “millionaire maker.” And he has made plans on how to spend some of the money he earns for selling the winning scratcher.

“I'm going to visit my friends in New York next year!” he told lottery officials.
