Last month, Block, the parent of the popular digital payment platform cash app, agreed to settle a class action lawsuit, accusing it of spam text messages that violated certain consumer protection laws, which reached $12.5 million despite not admitting any wrongdoing. Why are the cash app sued?

Plaintiff Kimberly Bottoms filed a class action lawsuit against Block in November 2023. A Washington state resident, who claims the company has sent unsolicited spam messages to customers of cash apps for violating two state consumer protection laws: the Washington Consumer Email Act and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. The lawsuit says it was done through the cash app’s “Invite Friends” recommendation program.

Block has agreed to resolve the matter, and the bottom will submit the motion to the Washington State federal court system for approval at the end of June.

Who is eligible for cash app settlement?

Given the nature of the allegations in the class action lawsuit, this settlement applies only to Washington State residents protected by two legal cash applications for alleged violations. Potential claimants also need to receive one of these spam messages from the company to be eligible. The settlement period begins on November 14, 2019, and the end date will be decided soon.

Based on available phone numbers, the settlement class is estimated to be approximately 2 million people. Block is expected to send emails and physical mail in the near future to remind people who may be eligible for class members, so if it all sounds like you are eligible, keep your eyes peeled.
