The victory for Waylens is the fifth victory for the UAE in this year, with defending champion Pogaka winning four other matches.
“It's a very special victory,” Wells said. “Everyone knows the Tour de France, but not many people win in the Tour de France, so it's very beautiful.”
After three tough days in the Pyrenees Mountains, the remaining 166 drivers face a transitional phase ahead of the second and final rest day of the tour in Montpellier this year.
The stage seemed to be about to get a disconnected victory, and Wells felt his chance for the last time in three categories of climbs, 55 km from the line.
Wellens came out of the eight-man leading group along with Michael Storer, Quinn Simmons and Campeanaerts.
The group made a brief reform in the long-term decline to the corpse, but after a moment Wells attacked at 44km, while the chasers never looked like the gap had been closed.
“I feel very good,” Weirence added. “I felt really good on the last climb of that day. I knew the others really felt good, but I knew I had to go alone. At the top of the climb, I found my moments and I felt like I had legs to keep it to the end.
“I know I have to enjoy this moment and ride it all the way to the finish line because I hope there is a big gap to enjoy it and maybe put the bike on after it’s over – but I’m glad I forgot to do that.”
“I'm happier than when I won the victory,” three-time tour champion Pogacar added.
The race resumed a 171.5km drive from Montpellier on Tuesday, and the mammoth finally climbed onto Mont Ventoux.
“This week was one of the toughest tour weeks I've ridden due to the terrain,” Pogacar said. [on Friday] Yesterday there was an altitude of 5,000m [gain].
“There is a big gap now, but we still have big mountains. We need to fight until the end.”
